2010 has been a great year for Gaza & Vybz Kartel’s Portmore Empire in general with all of the artists signed to the Gaza label having their fair spot light in the Jamaican dancehall scene.
So is the case for Merital Family a dancehall reggae band that hails from Flankers in Montego Bay, Jamaica and signed to Kartel’s music label for which they recorded several super catchy singles. Merital Family is one of the historical members of Kartel’s imprinting, going back to when Popcaan was just a kid moving his first steps in the Jamaican music scene.
Dancehall students eager to learn more about the Gaza, Merital Fam is part of the history of the Gaza. But way before Kartel got arrested and disbanded his collective of recording artists Merital Family left Gaza among some controversy.
In the following years one of the members died and another one got jailed in New York for drug trafficking, leaving the name Merital Family to become just a legend in the history of Jamaican dancehall music.
Merital Family sounds and songs were unique, with each member never overshadowing the others, with some r’n;b and gospel influences as well as of course dancehall and reggae music. They recorded several popular songs and among them, their popular music single “Real Friends” got the official music video, watch it below.
Their songs had always a sort of lesson or moral to teach the youths and in this case they talk about friends playing out other friends, thinking they are slick but they just sell out.
